Project 52 | Week 5 | On The Shelf

I am passionate about encouraging people to get photos out of their digital format and to display them in their homes instead of hoarding gazillions of digital files on the computer… It’s too easy for us to accumulate them so they never see the light of day and are often forgotten.  It’s for this reason that my business philosophy reflects this when I require my clients to purchase prints from me when they book a session… It’s not just because the quality of the print is superior compared to a regular consumer lab (although that is part of the reason)… It’s because I want my clients to ENJOY their prints in their home… to display them proudly… to see them every day and to share them with their family and friends…  An image hung upon a wall holds so much more life compared to when you see it on a computer screen.

Since I encourage my clients to print their photos, I also have to practise what I preach… Which is easy, because I have been wanting to display my photos up on my wall for so long, but have been waiting to move back to Adelaide to put it all together.  I have been planning my photo display for about 6 months…. I wanted something I could change around often without it becoming another cumbersome project… I take so many photos, it’s natural that my favourite photos change frequently and I like the idea of being able to switch them around on a whim.

This was when a fellow photographer friend (hi Kris!) posted up what she’d done with some picture ledges and I just fell in love with the whole idea and knew I was going to setup something simiilar in our home in Adelaide…. So 2 months after moving in, this is how my picture ledges/shelves looks…

For those curious, the ledges are from IKEA … (Although for my US friends, I’ve seen some great ones at Pottery Barn online… I so wish there was a Pottery Barn in Australia!)  The photos are a mix of 4x6in and 5x7in sizes and most of the frames are either from IKEA or Target (yes… just cheap frames… each frame costing somewhere between $7 – $15.  Except for that vintage looking double frame on the short ledge… I splurged on that one at $30).  I do plan on getting some better quality ones later… but for now these serve their purpose and I will gradually update as I find frames I like.  The “LOVE” sign, the vintage key, little birdhouse and the glass milk bottles holding the yellow flowers are all from from Bed Bath ‘n’ Table.  I love how it has all come together….  and I think the style is reflective of who I am … Crazily enough…. events have happened around here lately, that means we’ll be moving house in a month’s time!  Yes, that’s right folks… we are moving again, making it twice in 3 months!  I’ll be writing a blog post about that a little later… but suffice for now to say we’re only moving about 10 minutes away and after this there will be no more moving for us… ***EVER***!  So I’m going to have to setup the shelves again in the new house… but at least I’ve had a practise run now and it should be easy second time around!  I’ll probably even change the photos in the frames by the time we move again anyway…

Now go over and check out Sabrina Koogler | Pearland, TX Child and Family Photographer to see what she has on her shelf!
